George Müller (1805–1898) was a Christian missionary known worldwide for his faith and the orphanages he ran in England.
One day, a new orphan boy named Thomas arrived.
He came from a harsh institution where every mistake was punished:
- No smiling at the table
- Food only if perfectly behaved
- Harsh rules and constant fear
The first meal at Müller’s orphanage stunned Thomas.
Instead of being ordered to sit silently, the children smiled.
They even laughed.
No one shouted.
No one was afraid.
Then something completely new happened.
George Müller walked in and said:
“Let us thank our Father for His love and the food He has provided.”
Every child bowed their head respectfully.
Thomas froze — he didn’t know what to do.
The boy expected punishment.
But Müller smiled, put his hand on the boy’s shoulder, and whispered:
“You are safe here.
You are loved here.
You are family here.”
The boy’s eyes filled with tears.
No one had ever said that to him.
That moment — not rules… not pressure — broke the hardness inside him.
Over time, Thomas transformed:
- From fearful to peaceful
- From rebellious to helpful
- From angry to joyful
Not because of strict law
but because of grace that gave him identity and dignity.
The Message
The old orphanage tried to change Thomas by fear.
But fear cannot produce love.
Law can expose wrong…
but only grace can produce transformation.
“The law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
— John 1:17
George Müller once said:
“To love them, not to rule them —
that wins their hearts to Christ.”
